Do You Really Need Blue Light Glasses?

According to an American Academy of Ophthalmology reports that “it’s not necessary to spend money on special [eyewear] for computer use.”

Studies have shown that blue wavelengths can disrupt the body’s natural circadian rhythm by suppressing melatonin production levels that can interfere with sleep. A growing body of research is challenging the notion that blue light is bad. Scientists at the University of Manchester published a study in Current Biology that showed that yellow light disrupted sleep patterns in mice more than blue light.

Why all the fuss about blue light?
Blue light glasses claim to reduce eyestrain, headaches and sleep issues by filtering out blue
light from electronic devices but most ophthalmologists agree that the real issue is eye strain.

"The reality is that most of the problems we’re having with computers
and eyestrain isn’t from  blue light; it’s from how we use the computers."

      -- Amir Mohsenin, M.D.

      HOW TO REDUCE EYESTRAIN

      1. Follow the 20/20/20 Rule : Every 20 minutes, look at an object approx. 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

      2. Make sure you’re sitting an arm’s length away from the computer screen and tilt it downward to reduce glare.

      3. Adjust the lighting so that you’re not staring at a bright screen in a dark room.

      DON'T FORGET TO BLINK

Blinking is necessary to keep your eyes lubricated. When you’re focused on staring at your computer screen, your blink rate can drop by 50%.

      More tips:

      - use artificial tears
      - place devices on night mode
      - get an eye exam to make sure you don’t have any other issues with your eyes

What do you think? Do you own a pair of blue light glasses? Do they help you?
